There are commercial snail controls that you can purchase, just go to our snail and slug catagory and look at the reviews. But, for the do-it-yourselfer, here are some homemade snail repellent recipes and controls.

You can use plain beer, put into a tuna can, lids,or something similar. Snails will go in, but not come out. To really get them coming, try this:

1 1/4 TB brewers yeast
1 QT beer
1 QT apple cider
1 cup water
2 TB sugar
Place all of the ingredients in an old 1 gallon milk container or whatever you have, and shake hard until ingrediants are mixed. Place the mix in several shallow cans or lids around the garden. A liitle different version is the QT of beer with 1 tsp. of vinegar and 1 tsp of sugar.

We all know putting salt on snails and slugs causes them to dry up and die. To make this work even better, mix 1 part salt with 1 part cayenne pepper.

To keep snails and slugs from entering an area, such as a Backyard Greenhouses, make a line of baby powder, flour, diatomaceous earth, or something similar. Snails and slugs will not cross this line. They will not cross egg shells either.

For a soil ammendment and a snail repellent try Alfalfa meal. Sprinkle the alfalfa meal around your plants to keep them snail free.
