Natural Fly Repellent
Flies are the very bane of summer existence. They invite themselves to your outdoor barbecues, ballgames, and picnics on the lake. Flies land and consume their share of anything edible and if there is no food available, then they may turn their sights on you. Flies transmit disease and are, in general, a nuisance.
Many people cannot use commercial fly sprays as the chemicals can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Many of them are minimally effective, and if ingested by small children or pets, are poisonous.
The best way to repel flies and keep your family and the environment safe is to make your own biodegradable, natural fly repellent, using inexpensive, easily obtained ingredients that many people already have in their homes.
Step One: Obtain and thoroughly clean a tin or aluminum can. It is best if you use one with a removable lid so that it can be reused.
Step Two: Cut a section out of a new, clean dish sponge that will fit inside the tin can
Step Three: Saturate the sponge with one of the properly prepared oils:
· Lavender
· Citronella
· Eucalyptus
· Pennyroyal
· Peppermint
· Lemongrass
(Note: some of these oils should be diluted with water before pouring onto the sponge. Please see directions on the container and prepare as directed.)
Step Four: Place the sponge in the can and cover with the lid. Allow to stand for twenty four hours.
Step Five: Place the can in the center of the table where flies are likely to congregate. Not only will the flies take a detour, but also your table will smell great.
Step Six: Re-saturate the sponge whenever re-using the can.
This method is extremely effective in reducing or eliminating flies from your picnic or barbecue, making your event memorable for the right reasons. You will also find that this method is effective for repelling mosquitoes as well.
