Natural Bird Repellents

There is nothing more calming that bird watching, unless those birds have decided to call your home their home. Birds, especially overly aggressive or destructive ones, can quickly change from natural wonder to wonder how to get rid of it. Birds can be somewhat difficult to deter and many mechanical wonders have been invented to try and dissuade them from roosting in your rafters, but a more effective, natural bird repellent can be concocted using a few inexpensive household items.

The bet defense against birds is a good offense. Chemical repellents are generally ineffective at repelling birds, either commercially prepared on homemade. Plus, laws protect many birds, especially migratory ones. Any attempt to remove them in a manner that may be deemed harmful is generally not recommended.

The first thing you should do is to remove any easy sources of food. Birds, like most us, are opportunistic feeders, opting for the easy meal over the hunt any day of the week. If you have bird feeders out, take them up, or at least empty them.

Birds are not easily dissuaded by the use of sprays or chemicals, but more by mechanical means. The easiest natural bird repellent is to create way to keep eh birds from roosting. Drape fine mesh netting over your trees and bushes. This keeps the birds from having a place to roost. It also keeps woodpeckers from being able to access food sources.

Loud noises also tend to discourage birds from hanging around, but will work for short amounts of time, as birds will acclimate easily to it. Install an alarm that you can sound at random times during the day so scare the birds away.

Last but not least, water is a good natural bird repellent. Periodically spray the birds in your yard with random bursts of water, or purchase a motion detection sprinkler kit that will spray the birds when they enter.
